Three associated lawsuits are before the Ontario courts against Canadian mining firm Hudbay Minerals over the brutal killing of Adolfo Ich along with the gang rape of 11 girls from Lote Ocho. In a precedent-setting judgment in July of 2013, an Ontario court determined that lawsuits could proceed to trial in Canada over the objections of Hudbay Minerals. At home he is also taking on the big guys in a situation against Encana Corp. which 's challenging the regulation and practice of hydraulic fracking in Canada. What Republicans needed to say: Kudos for standing up for, upholding Canadian values, wherever we operate.
Orlando Da Silva
President, Ontario Bar Association, Toronto, Ont. Da Silva's heartfelt public confession of a very long and profound depression and attempted suicide has started up discussion on mental health over the legal community like never before. Even though there's a deep-rooted stigma against mental illness facilitated by a dominance of type A personalities, Da Silva's brave leadership has helped develop technical support programs for attorneys who battle in silence. As if this was not enough, Da Silva has gone one step farther and asked lawyers to call him personally if they require support. His supporters underline that Da Silva's efforts are critical in a business that promotes bravado and frequently mistakes mental illness for an individual weakness. What Republicans needed to say: Mr. Da Silva's bravery in grounding increasingly acknowledged mental health problems in the legal profession within their personal experience will advance these issues among attorneys and cause positive ends.
Mark Tamminga
Partner, Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP, Hamilton, Ont. Tamminga has devoted his career to automating lawful practices. His information technologies focus began in 1986 while he was still a law student and was given the task of systemizing the manufacturing environment for files. Since then, Tamminga's aptitude for legal technology has only grown with Gowlings LLP. Three years ago, he had been named Gowlings' Innovation Initiatives leader. He is responsible for automating the Gowlings recovery services clinic. He has designed and built lots of further training systems in the fields of debt collection, loan placement, and civil litigation. His role has required re-thinking that the thornier aspects of big business operations: managing cultural change, inducing client-side believing, and building the reimbursement mechanisms, which drive new behavior. Jean-Pierre Blais
Chairman, Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, Ottawa-Gatineau Blais is not afraid of criticism and is willing to go above and beyond in the name of consumer rights. A recent CRTC decision will give consumers more freedom to choose TV channels of the liking as part of the cable and satellite subscriptions regardless of bitter opposition from Canada's cable companies. Blais known as former Bell Media president Kevin Crull, without naming names, over reports Crull told CTV news personnel not to interview him later that choice. Crull ended up apologizing for interfering in the information gathering process and afterwards stepped down. From telemarketers to telcos, Blais always intends to encourage the rights and needs of customers. What Republicans needed to say: Achieving big change with consumer-minded focus. About time!
Sara Cohen
Creator, Fertility Law Canada in D2Law LLP, Toronto, Ont. Cohen has devoted her career to 2 activities which have changed the practice of fertility law for the better in Canada and outside. She has spent countless hours teaching and mentoring on the field of fertility as an adjunct professor, at home and abroad. Her collegiality in a notoriously competitive region of the law, truly underlines Cohen's dedication to enhancing the practice of fertility law. More importantly she pushes change she wants to see in this burgeoning area of law. Recent lobbying efforts are sure to pay off; one of them to obtain coverage for in vitro fertilization services through Ontario's health plan in addition to modifications to the family law legislation which would clarify that a sperm donor isn't a parent only by virtue of being a donor. Lastly, she is the very first adjunct professor in the country to offer a course solely dedicated to reproductive law in Canada, helping clear the route for prospective area professionals. What voters had to say: Sara was instrumental in improving the law in assisted reproductive technologies. Genuinely cares about her area of expertise. This isn't simply a task for Sara, it's her passion.
